1843-1916. US novelist, who lived in Europe
from 1875 and became a naturalized British
subject 1915. His novels deal with the impact
of sophisticated European culture on the
innocent American. They include The Portrait
of a Lady 1881, Washington Square 1881, The
Bostonians 1886, The Ambassadors 1903, and
The Golden Bowl 1904. He also wrote more than
a hundred shorter works of fiction, notably
the supernatural tale The Turn of the Screw
1898. Other major works include Roderick
Hudson 1876, The American 1877, The Tragic
Muse 1890, The Spoils of Poynton 1897, The
Awkward Age 1899, The Wings of the Dove 1902.
He is assessed, both in the USA and Europe,
as one of the most significant and
influential US writers. His career spanned
more than half a century. Other major works
include Roderick Hudson 1876, The American
1877, The Tragic Muse 1890, The Spoils of
Poynton 1897, The Awkward Age 1899, The Wings
of the Dove 1902. His mastery of the novel
set the standard for many 20th-century
writers.
